Tim Means off UFC on Fox 5 after he slipped in the sauna when cutting weight
Just over 24 hours from the start of UFC on Fox 5, the card had one more change due to an accident that puts some stock in the theory the UFC is cursed in 2012.
Lightweight Tim Means was supposed to face Abel Trujilo in the preliminary fights that will air on FX on Saturday. While cutting weight for Friday's weigh-in, Means slipped and fell in the sauna. UFC president Dana White tweeted Means knocked himself out.
The UFC curse strikes again. Tim Means slips in sauna and KO's himself so now Marcus LeVesseur vs Abel Trujillo
? Dana White (@danawhite) December 7, 2012
LeVesseur had been scheduled to fight Michael Chiesa, but he scratched late last week due to illness. Now, he's back on the card and preparing for the next day for his opponent. Most fighters prepare for an opponent for at least six weeks.
The UFC has had a run of injuries in 2012 that bordered on unbelievable. Champions Dominick Cruz, Jose Aldo and Georges St-Pierre all took extended breaks from fighting because of injury. Dan Henderson's knee injury before his scheduled UFC 151 bout with light heavyweight champ Jon Jones led to the cancellation of the Labor Day weekend event. In May, the all-heavyweight main card of UFC 146 had to be reworked several times because of injury.
And now, even as the end of 2012 nears, Forrest Griffin and Chris Weidman both had to pull out of the year-end UFC 155 event. This is all topped off by a fighter slipping and falling the day before an event. 2013 can't come quickly enough for the UFC.

Toshiba Excite 7.7 is getting its Android 4.1 OTA update
Coming a bit out of left field, the Toshiba Excite 7.7 tablet is receiving an OTA update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. A model that most people had forgotten about (including Toshiba, many would've guessed,) the 7.7-inch variety of the Excite is pulling down a quite sizeable 348MB update that will bring it up to Android 4.1.1. The update will bring the new UI style -- with centered navigation buttons and new status bar -- that we've seen on the latest updates to the Nexus 7, along with all of the other new Jelly Bean goodies like Project Butter and Google Now.
The update is now live and many users are reporting that the OTA is hitting their tablets. Have you been notified on your device yet? Let us know in the comments.

Strikeforce confirms January card will be its last
From the second Ronda Rousey's UFC bout with Liz Carmouche was announced, Strikeforce's end was rumored. The promotion has been teetering since having to cancel two cards in a row in September and November. Now, the Zuffa-owned, Showtime-backed promotion has confirmed that their January show will be their last.
?Since 2009, Showtime has been a great partner and we appreciate its support of Strikeforce and our athletes,? Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker said via the promotion's website. ?For our final event, we?ve loaded the card with some outstanding fights. This is going to be a memorable night for the sport of mixed martial arts.?
The event takes place Jan. 12 in Oklahoma City, and will feature:
Nate Marquardt vs. Tarec Saffiedine
Daniel Cormier vs. Dion Staring
Josh Barnett vs. Nandor Guelmino
Gegard Mousasi vs. Mike Kyle
Ronaldo ?Jacare? Souza vs. Ed Herman
Pat Healy vs. to be determined
Roger Gracie vs. Anthony Smith
Tim Kennedy vs. Trevor Smith
KJ Noons vs. Ryan Couture
Jorge Gurgel vs. Adriano Martin
Estevan Payan vs. Michael Bravo
It's a fun card for the finale to a promotion that has provided memorable moments but was plagued with inconsistency.

Report: China's Wanxiang looking to diffuse political fears over A123 purchase
Filed under: China, Government/Legal, Earnings/Financials
Wanxiang Group has insisted A123 Systems will remain an American company operationally following intense scrutiny from US lawmakers. China's largest parts manufacturer purchased A123 Systems at auction after the company fell into insolvency, but the battery maker holds a number of defense contracts with the US government. Pin Ni, head of Wanxiang's US operations, told Reuters that A123 will not be folded into the group's lithium-ion battery unit and will instead remain an American company. The $257 million Wanxiang bid excludes the A123 defense contracts.
David Vieau, A123 CEO, said many of the concerns are overblown since his company has been manufacturing batteries in China for the past six years. The company has also worked to develop battery technology with SAIC Motor Corporation, a Chinese-state owned entity. Even so, insiders close to the deal say the battery maker hasn't shared some of its more important advancements with its partners, including tech that helps increase a battery's power density.
Meanwhile, Johnson Controls, the company that lost the bid to acquire A123 Systems by $6 million, has said it continues to be interested in the bankrupt company should the US government not approve Wanxiang's purchase.

Bombardier issues two Can-Am Spyder recalls over fire risks
Filed under: Recalls, Safety, Motorcycle
Bombardier has issued two separate recalls for various models of its Can-Am Spyder. The first is for 2008-2009 GS and 2010 RS models. The fuel vapor canister vent hose in the engine compartment can leak, with accumulated fuel vapor a potential fire concern due to its proximity to the ignition. A bulletin from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates the recall, which affects 9,600 Spyders, is expected to begin next month, at which time owners can take their Spyders to their dealers for a fix free of charge.
The second recall covers 2008-2009 GS, 2009-2012 RS and 2010-2012 RT trikes. The models affected by the recall - 33,700 units in all - could have fuel caps that fail to fit properly onto their filler necks, which could also leak fuel vapors. The recall is also expected to begin next month, and Bombardier will send owners a new fuel cap. Two bulletins below from NHTSA below have all the details.

A Libertarian Case for Having More Kids
We were going to stop at two. Two kids that is. We had even taken some admittedly reversible but not-inexpensive steps to make sure we didn't have a third. Then my aunt cracked a joke."When are you gonna get that fertile Italian wife of yours pregnant again," she said over the phone one Thanksgiving. I laughed heartily at the time, knowing she was kidding ... or at least half-kidding. Despite coming from a family of eight kids, my father ended up being the only one of his male siblings to have a son. But this was the first time any of them had even hinted that I should think...

Dana White stirs up controversy in role as homeless man during Fox NFL Sunday
A tiny role as a homeless guy in a not-so-funny betting skit on the "Fox NFL Sunday" show has created yet another Internet uproar about UFC president Dana White.
In a skit in which comedian Rob Riggle was doing a rather flat impersonation of a pro football tipster, White appeared toward the end as a homeless man in a box. In the skit, Riggle had been bragging about his network of sources and said he'd take information from anyone who could help him make his picks.
The video cuts to White, who said in an odd voice, "Cam Newton is pregnant. Ha ha ha ha!"
The cast on the "Fox NFL Sunday" show laughed and pointed out that it was White and that the UFC has a card airing on Saturday from Key Arena in Seattle. It seemed like a harmless, though not very funny, way to get a free mention of his fight card during a highly watched NFL broadcast.
But then, one of White's nearly 2.4 million Twitter followers, Jason Wozny, chastised him. Wozny, whose handle is @UFCWozny, gave the UFC president a bit of blowback.
Wozny wrote, "Ahh, done in bad taste Dana. Not funny for those who actually live out of a box. Should apologize."
If you know White even remotely well, you knew there would be a response but that it wouldn't be an apology. And, of course, White's response created a firestorm of its own.
He took a shot at Wozny and referred to him with a slang word for coward.
Wozny stuck to his guns and told White he thought the skit was in bad taste. White responded with another insult and urged him to get a sense of humor.
Let's start by saying that Riggle's writing for the skit isn't going to earn him an Emmy nomination for comedic writing. Nor will White be nominated for his, ahem, acting.
But White was hardly trying to poke fun at homeless people or make light of their plight. He was using unconventional, and probably not very effective, means to try to promote his fight. The UFC's most highly watched Fox card to date was its first, on Nov. 12, 2011, when Junior dos Santos knocked out Cain Velasquez to win the heavyweight title.
It's no coincidence that show got by far the highest ratings of any of the four Fox cards to date, given that it was the only one aired during NFL season and that it got a ton of promotional assistance on Fox NFL broadcasts.
White took the opportunity to access the massive NFL audience to pump up his fight.
He's been way in the wrong on things before. He used a slur used to describe homosexuals during an unbelievably over-the-top rant in 2009 against then-Sherdog reporter Loretta Hunt. He later apologized to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation and has subsequently said that's the one thing in his career he regrets.
He's also looked the other way as some of his fighters have openly harassed female reporters with lewd and suggestive comments.
But White did nothing wrong here. He certainly didn't offend homeless people, and he wasn't trying to lessen their plight in any way.
Wozny deserves much respect for at least standing up for the downtrodden, though I think he was overcome by a bad case of political correctness.
