Star Trek: The Next Generation Season One Blu-ray beams down July 24th

After a teaser release of three episodes earlier this year, CBS Home Entertainment has set a date for the complete first season Star Trek: The Next Generation to arrive on Blu-ray, just in time for its 25th anniversary. July 24th the six-disc set hits shelves featuring all of the first season episodes remastered in high definition complete with recomposited special effects and 7.1 DTS-HD surround soundtracks, as well as a slew of special features including new behind the scenes interviews and featurettes on the HD upgrade process. Check after the break for the press release with a list of episodes and features, plus a video preview of what the new effects look like from The Next Level teaser in January. Check Entertainment Weekly for another preview of the upgraded footage, while TheHDRoom has a few still captures from the Blu-ray versions.

Verizon announces new prepaid wireless plans

Samsung Illusion

Starting tomorrow (May 1), Verizon will begin offering up a new prepaid wireless plan, with unlimited talk and text plus 1GB of data for $80 monthly. You'll have to buy a new phone of course, and for now the only phone being offered is the less-than-stellar Samsung Illusion. You will be able to grab one in stores or online for $170, and it should be coming soon to Target, Best Buy, Radio Shack and WalMart.

If you're looking for something with a bit more oompf, the prepaid Verizon Jetpack LTE hotspot could be what you're needing. Pricing starts at 250MB for $15 per week, 3GB for $60 per month or 10GB for $90 per month. The Jetpack itself will be available for $129.99 at Verizon stores and online, and it's also coming soon to Best Buy, Radio Shack and WalMart.

You'll find the press release after the break.

Stereo Skateboards' Hand-Painted Deck Series

Colt Bowden knows a thing or two about skateboarding and he knows a lot about art. So what better way to combine those two talents than to hand-paint the Spring 2012 Stereo Classics division deck series? His art pays close attention to detail, and his use of typography makes his work distinctive.

"I find most of my inspiration from mid-1900's sign-painting as well as americana folk art and illustration." said Bowden of his work.

Video: AWD vs. One Wheel Drive: Audi TT RS Plus pitted against Ducati 1199 Panigale S

Ducati 1199 Panigale versus Audi TT RS

It was only a matter of time, folks. As soon as Audi finalized its purchase of the Ducati brand, we knew to expect a slew of comparison tests pitting the German automaker's finest wares against the two-wheeled exotica rolling out of Italy's best-known motorcycle maker.

The scribes from Germany's Auto Bild have indeed taken up the challenge. But what machinery to choose? Naturally, the mind first turns to the R8 supercar and its Lamborghini-derived V10 engine, but, in reality, Audi officials have conceded to us that its 360-horsepower TT RS is actually quicker around most race tracks. So, the all-wheel-drive TT RS Plus it is.

Holding the mantle for Ducati is none other than the 1199 Panigale - an easy choice, as this is the marque's premier superbike for 2012. Sure, there was a replica MotoGP machine a few years back called the Desmosedici RR, but that bike is sold out and the Panigale is likely faster in the hands of all but the most talented riders anyway.

So, who wins? You'll have to scroll down and watch the video to find out, but suffice it to say that it wasn't even close.

Rashad Evans? busted eye and Mac Danzig?s busted ankle are your pictures of the day

Those short elbows that Jon Jones used on Rashad Evans, and the heel hook Efrain Escudero used on Mac Danzig did some damage. Evans tweeted a picture of his eye the day after the fight. Danzig, who managed to win his bout even though his ankle was swollen and ugly, showed how it was still bruised and swollen. He plans to get an MRI later this week to see what damage was caused at UFC 146. It's just another reminder that fighters' jobs are not like ours, unless your job involves laughing off injuries on a daily basis.

Report: Slovenian supercar builder aims to tackle Lamborghini Aventador

It's been almost a fortnight, which just might be a record, since we last visited a previously unheard-of supercar-maker. Next up to keep the high-po exotic ball in play is Tushek Supercars, hailing from Slovenia (that's here), with its quaintly archaically named Forego T700. The company just made an appearance at the Top Marques Monaco with its first car, the 444-horsepower Renovatio T500 (pictured in our gallery below) with a modular hardtop, but the T700 will push things much further.

Founder Aljosa Tushek told Autocar the T700's targets: less than 2,200 pounds, more than 700 horsepower, up to 3.3gs for cornering. That latter number sounds like a math error would not only double the Renovatio's number, it would triple the cornering force sustained by the Lamborghini Aventador around the Nardo test track.

The limited-to-30-units Renovatio is priced at £245,000 ($394,934 U.S.) with deliveries promised later this year. Due in 2013, you can expect the T700 to outdo the T500's price by at least double as well, and you can expect both of them to never be sold in the U.S.

London Science Museum goes mobile with an augmented reality app

Science Museum

Using your Android phone in a museum might not be your first thought, but if you head to the London Science Museum that is exactly what you should do. Featuring well known British TV personality, Top Gear's James May, their Science Stories app takes advantage of augmented reality technology to bring the museum alive.

May will be your own personal guide to 9 of the best exhibits in the "Making The Modern World" gallery. By pointing the app at relevant points throughout the exhibits, your very own James May will appear on your screen and talk you through what you see in front of you. While not necessarily a completely new idea, it is refreshing to see an institution such as a famous museum moving into the mobile experience. Better still, at £1.99 in the Google Play Store, it's likely cheaper than those awful headphone tour guides you can purchase. Download links can be found after the break, and at the source link you can find a trigger for the app that you can try at home.

Mitt Romney and Flip-Flop Fatigue

Greg Sargent, Washington Post
A couple months ago, during the GOP primary, I speculated that Mitt Romney was benefitting from a phenomenon you might call “flip-flop fatigue.” The crush of equivocations, reversals and rhetorical contortions had gotten so relentless and ubiquitous that people had grown too exhausted to bother tracking or objecting to them anymore. In the context of the general election, this has only grown more pronounced. If anyone thought conservatives, or neutral commentators, would hold Romney to the positions he professed to hold during the primary — and wouldn’t...

Open Clouds: Immature or Good Enough?

"Immature" is one of those code words that execs trot out when they're faced with disruptive competition that's likely to eat their lunch over the long haul. For example, VMware CEO Paul Maritz likes to dismiss OpenStack as immature. While OpenStack may not feature parity with VMware's cloud offerings, it's likely to be "good enough" much sooner than Maritz cares to admit.

Maritz was saying that VMware's "greater, nearer-term challenge will probably come from Microsoft." This is classic framing, trying to ensure that customers compare VMware's offerings against a similar proprietary offering. But customers will increasingly employ the long view and consider open cloud options as well.

Immaturity Doesn't Last

Open clouds, OpenStack being just one, are following a similar development trajectory to Linux and open source databases. In phase one, the technology is for early adopters and not at all comparable with proprietary offerings. Early adopters and companies that take a long view and/or have a good reason to disrupt the market deploy and contribute to the projects to push them toward maturity.

Not long after this, the tech remains immature but is considered good enough for many workloads. It starts pushing into mainstream usage more and more with each release. IT staff tests it and finds that it can get the job done without having to waste budget on the proprietary software.

At this stage, proprietary vendors like VMware can still make a case for their products for high-end deployments, and for being better documented and/or having more features. But for many customers, that doesn't matter. The tech is good enough to get the job done, and the money not spent on software licenses easily compensates for the gap between the open source project and the proprietary alternatives.

OpenStack, et al, are very close to good enough, or have already reached that stage for many workloads. Quite a few companies are already deploying CloudStack and Eucalyptus.

From here, it's not going to be long before Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) is just as much a commodity as the compiler, operating system, database, hypervisor and hardware.

VMware has already lived through this cycle at the hypervisor level. It wasn't that long ago that VMware folks were claiming that the hypervisor was still a value proposition. Ultimately, the company had to concede that the hypervisor had become a commodity component and made ESXi free to customers. The value had moved up the stack to management tools, where VMware still had an advantage.

But open tools are once again nipping at VMware's heels, beginning to make the IaaS stacks a commodity proposition.

Take the Long View

Despite the relative immaturity of open IaaS platforms, it makes sense to start evaluating them now with an eye to standardizing on an open stack (but not necessarily OpenStack).

One, it's almost certain that the platforms will reach maturity soon. Naturally, the larger the user and contributor pool for each platform, the better.

Secondly, if a company hasn't already made an investment in a proprietary platform, why lock yourself in now? While VMware or Microsoft would no doubt like to lock up the private cloud market, buying into those platforms now is a good way to ensure that you're going to be stuck with them in the long run.

Maybe VMware or Microsoft have the right platform for your environment, but the current state of OpenStack shouldn't be the deciding factor. All of the open cloud projects have been maturing rapidly, and it'd be foolish to assume they won't be ready for your workloads sooner rather than later.

Could the Hyundai Veloster go topless? [w/poll]

Hyundai Veloster Convertible rendering - Theophilus Chin

The Hyundai Veloster has been a bit polarizing since it went on sale last year. And the debate could get more animated if the Korean company does what we think it's thinking about doing.

At a recent gathering of reporters and Hyundai executives in Ann Arbor, MI, where the annual Rolling Sculpture Car Show takes place every summer, we asked Hyundai Motors America chief John Krafcik what he planned to bring this year (the college town is also home to Hyundai America Technical Center). Last year, they showed off the new Veloster.

Redone Azera? New Santa Fe? Neither seems appropriate for the tone of the event. So, we threw this out: "How about chopping the top off the Veloster and see the reaction?"

Krafcik and PR man Jim Trainor started trying to make poker faces, indicating to us that we may well have stumbled on to a future project, Rolling Sculpture or no. But we aren't sure.

Some thought the Veloster was an answer to a question that nobody had been asking, but the unique coupe is proving to be a great sales and image success for Hyundai. Krafcik has shown a great instinct for design and engineering the Hyundai lineup to successful heights: redesigns of the Sonata, Elantra, Accent and now Santa Fe. He also had a lot to do with the cleanup of the Azera, and, of course, the Genesis and Genesis Coupe. A former product development executive at Ford, it's hard to think he would not be the current product development chief in Dearborn had he stayed, and not been scooped up by Hyundai a decade ago.

Hyundai's sales have been supply constrained on many of its models, including the Veloster. Given a finite supply of Veloster models that it can source from Korea, Krafcik plans to emphasize production of the upcoming Turbo model. That strikes us as a smart move.

We're excited about the turbo, but we couldn't resist asking a rendering artist to imagine the Veloster sans roof. What do you think? Is topless a good thing in this case?
