Casey Stoner topped the first session of practice for the MotoGP class at Barcelona, taking over from his Repsol Honda teammate Dani Pedrosa in the final minutes of the session. Jorge Lorenzo led a gaggle of Yamahas, with Cal Crutchlow making the best of his new brakes to get ahead of the second factory Yamaha of Ben Spies. Stefan Bradl took the 6th fastest time, very close to the pace of Crutchlow and Spies. Nicky Hayden got the best of the new electronics package on his Ducati, setting the 7th fastest time just a thousandth of a second behind Bradl, and just ahead of Karel Abraham. Andrea Dovizioso ended the session in 9th, ahead of Alvaro Bautista, while Valentino Rossi ended the session in 11th.
