Thomas Luthi dominated the first session of free practice for the Moto2 class at Barcelona, getting to the top of the timesheets early and only briefly ceding top spot to Pol Espargaro in the latter stages, before upping the pace and posting the fastest Moto2 lap ever recorded at the circuit. Espargaro ended the session in 2nd, over half a second behind the Swiss rider, while Scott Redding took 5th spot nearly nine tenths off the pace of Luthi.
Speed Up's Mike Di Meglio grabbed 4th spot, ahead of Redding's Marc VDS teammate Mika Kallio, while Frenchman Johann Zarco rounds out the top 6. Marc Marquez could manage only the 12th position in FP1, nearly 1.4 seconds off the pace of Luthi.
